We use low-cost index funds as the core component in managing our clients' money.  More specifically, we use exchange-traded index funds (ETFs) from Charles Schwab.

Why?  Because low-cost, index ETFs have many benefits (See here).  And Schwab's Index ETFs are among the best, lowest cost index ETFs on the market.  The total cost for the Schwab Index ETFs we use with our clients are lower than the total cost for comparable Vanguard Index ETFs.  And Vanguard is a company known for their low fees.  Also, because we use the Charles Schwab platform, they waive their commission charge when we buy or sell their ETFs, which saves you even more.

What does Warren Buffett think?  Warren Buffett is considered by many to be the greatest investor of all time.  In his 2017 annual letter to shareholders, he stated, "Both large and small investors should stick with low-cost index funds."

Note: College 529 Plans and Retirement Plans (401k's, etc) may include low-cost index funds from other fund companies (Vanguard, etc).  And in certain cases, some clients may own other types of investments, including individual stocks.

To learn more about the Benefits of Index Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), read our blog post:
Benefits of Index Exchange Traded Funds

Sequence of Investing - Where Should You Invest Your Money First?

We can't control the stock market.  And we can't predict what the stock market will do next.  A person may get lucky from time to time, but we don't believe anybody (including financial advisors) can accurately and consistently predict what the market will do next.

But we can help our clients take advantage of the stuff we can control.

Here are a few things we can control, things we do for our clients:

  • We can make sure your Asset Allocation is appropriate for your situation.
  • We can help you save on taxes by taking advantage of all the tax-efficient accounts that are available to you.
  • We can make sure your 'Sequence of Investing' is correct.

  • We can help you with the 'Backdoor Roth IRA Strategy'.

PRICING

(Select the tabs above to see more)

For our Investment Management Services, we keep it simple.  We have an asset-based advisory fee for all our accounts.  It's fair and reasonable.  We receive no additional compensation (commissions, etc) from the investment products we recommend.  This helps remove any conflict of interest, and allows us to focus on what we think is best for you.

What is Our Cost

$0 - $1mil1.00%
$1mil- $2mil0.75%
$2mil+0.50%

*The above rates are annualized (per year).  With College 529 Plan and Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Accounts, our fee is a flat 0.50% per year.  If you have $1mil+ in billable assets with us, we will waive our advisory fee on your DAF Account(s).  The above fee schedule may not apply to insurance-related products.  In the rare case we recommend an insurance-related product, we may receive a commission if you ultimately purchase the insurance-related product.  If/when this applies, we will be sure to tell you.

Everything we offer.

Our costs are fair and reasonable AND we will take great care of you.  Here are a few things we can do for you:

  • All the strategies listed on our 'Investment Services' page...these can make a big difference.
(Click here to see these strategies)
  • Advice and recommendations on what tax-efficient accounts you should use to help you save on taxes.
  • Ongoing account management.
  • Automated weekly email updates to let you know how your account(s) changed in value over the previous week.
  • Access to our Client Performance Portal...so you will always know how you are doing.
  • Help with your retirement plan at work (401k, etc).

  • Advice with any other wealth-related questions.
  • Reviews of your investment account(s) on request, with the option to use a simple screen share...saving you time and energy.
  • Recommendations with your insurance needs.
  • And more.

The previous tab, 'What is Our Cost', tells you how we are compensated for our services.  With that said, it is very common for investment products to have an additional internal cost that is sometimes "hidden".  When you add these together, this is your 'Total Cost of Investing'.  Your 'Total Cost of Investing' is your all-in total cost.  It includes everything ("hidden" fees, mutual fund expenses, etc).  It's important to understand your 'Total Cost of Investing'.  We use low-cost investments to keep your 'Total Cost of Investing' relatively low.

Here is what you can expect with us:

  • With regular investment accounts (including IRAs), we use low-cost Schwab Index ETFs as the core component in managing our clients' money.  The additional "hidden" internal cost with these Index ETFs is less than 0.10% per year.  With our 1.00% advisory fee, your 'Total Cost of Investing' would be less than 1.10% per year, and this includes everything.
(Click here to learn more about index ETFs)

  • With College 529 Plan Accounts, we use the Schwab 529 Plan.  The "program fee" for the Schwab 529 Plan is 0.30% per year, and this includes the internal cost of the funds.  With our 0.50% advisory fee on College 529 Plan Accounts, your 'Total Cost of Investing' would be 0.80% per year (less than 1.00%) on your College 529 Plan Account(s).  (Click here to learn more about College 529 Plan Accounts)

Most firms aren't this transparent about your 'Total Cost of Investing'.  And it's probably because their 'Total Cost of Investing' is relatively high.  Many investors don't realize all the fees and expenses they are paying.  You might be surprised with your total cost.

Prospective Clients:  Do you know your 'Total Cost of Investing'?  If you want to compare the total cost with us versus the total cost you are currently paying, we'd be happy to do a total cost comparison.

To learn more about this, read our blog post:
Know Your Total Cost of Investing

According to research done by Morningstar, fund fees predict future success or failure...and the expense ratio is the most proven predictor of future fund returns.  In other words, the lower your costs, the better your future returns are likely to be.  Basically, your 'Total Cost of Investing' is one of the most important factors in determining your future investment performance.

To read more about this Morningstar research, here's a link to the article:  'Fund Fees Predict Future Success or Failure'

We understand how important it is to keep your 'Total Cost of Investing' relatively low....so this is one of our main priorities.

Hello!  I'm Brock.  And if we're ever going to work together, it's only fair you know a little about me.  I'm a native South Dakotan and have lived here my entire life.  I grew up in the small town of Onida, SD (population 800).  Yep, I learned how to create my own fun at a very young age.  I was raised in a farming family.  So I planted corn, harvested wheat, all that good stuff.  It taught me hard work...and also that I never wanted to be a farmer.  I was able to escape farming and attend college at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, SD.  I have nothing but great memories from these earlier years.

In 2001, I started my financial advisor career with Morgan Stanley.  And boy, did that give me a memory I will never forget.  At the time, Morgan Stanley did their training at the World Trade Center in New York.  Yes, in July 2001, only a couple months before 9/11, I spent 3 weeks training to be a financial advisor at THE World Trade Center.  It was an experience I will never forget!  I also survived the 2008-2009 financial crisis while at Morgan Stanley (hope I don't see that again).  And ultimately, I earned the title of Associate Vice President.  I learned a great deal in the almost 10 years I was at Morgan Stanley.  But I wanted to start my own firm.

So in 2010, I launched HyLine Wealth and haven't looked back.  As an independent advisor, I don't have to worry about another firm's agenda (commission goals, product sales, etc).  I can focus on what I think is best for my clients.  I'm in this business because I love helping people.  I enjoy keeping up with the latest ideas and strategies that might help my clients get ahead.  Frankly, it doesn't feel like work to me.  It feels like something I would do if I didn't need a job.

On a personal note, I'm an avid fair weather fan of the Chicago Cubs (2016 champs), Chicago Bears (not good), Nebraska Cornhuskers (could be better), and anything related to South Dakota State University (Go Jacks!).  I love talking about new and big ideas...it energizes me.  If we meet, maybe you can tell me about one of your big ideas.

And there, now you know a little about me.

If we're not working together already, I would love to compete for your business.

Below is a list of our Preferred Partners that help us better serve our clients:

  • Charles Schwab:  We use the Charles Schwab platform as our preferred custodian.  This is where the majority of our clients' assets are held.  They provide an amazing platform that allows us to efficiently manage our clients' assets.  And they also provide us with great support.

  • Vanguard/Ascensus:  We use the Vanguard/Ascensus platform for our retirement plan business (401k's, etc).  They offer a bundled plan that includes administration, custody, and record keeping for our retirement plan business (401k's, etc).  This allows us to focus on the advisory stuff, such as fund selection, enrollment meetings, and participant education.

  • Graber & Associates:  Graber & Associates is an independent general insurance agency located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  They help us with a lot.  If our clients need health insurance (Wellmark or Sanford Health), Medicare, life insurance, disability insurance, long-term care insurance, group insurance, or other types of insurance, they provide us with quotes and act as the agent of record if our client ultimately purchases a product they recommend.

  • MutualMed:  MutualMed is also located in Sioux Falls.  They help us when individuals or businesses want Avera Health Plans for their health insurance.

  • The Ark Group:  The Ark Group is an independent general insurance agency located in Omaha, Nebraska.  They help with all things insurance.  And since The Ark Group is able to do business in all 50 states, they help us be "location-independent".

The above Preferred Partners do help us serve our clients, but they are independent third parties.  Our relationship with them is strictly that, as a third party.  Our views don't always represent their views and vice versa.  For more information about our relationship with Preferred Partners, see our Important Disclosures & Disclaimers at the bottom of this website.

CONTACT us

Our physical office is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  But we consider ourselves "location-independent" as we use a heavy dose of technology to communicate and serve you.  This includes screen sharing technology, e-applications, electronic signatures when possible, and shared client portals so we can view the same information at the same time.  The "de minimis exemption" allows us to do business in most other states (with only a few exceptions).  Pretty much wherever you're located, we can work together.
